Resolutions for Dreamers

By Bea

I'll admit it, looking forward to a year of: productivity, hard work, finances, jobs and all these buzzwords that come with an overly industrialised capitalist society could only bring a self-proclaimed sensualist to depression and ironically enough, to unproductivity. If you're anything like me, you too will feel that only if your soul and your heart are fulfilled can you engage in the real-world endeavours without feeling like you're losing yourself. Every soul and heart craves something different, I could never do a definitive list for dreamers; we are dispersed, otherworldly, all too fluctuating to be like one another. But I can give you some ideas that will bring you closer to that feeling of being in-between worlds. Take what resonates.

One:

- Give yourself a latin name, just like the scientific names for plants and tend to yourself like one: water your roots with the mist of your passions, your useless, soul-fullfiling hobbies, your favourite songs, everything that fuels your soul and watch yourself blossom into a beautiful flower.

Two:

- Live seasonally. Eat the fruits and vegetables of now, curate your wardrobe to be your sword against the scorching heat and/or the chilling cold, make seasonal beverages from around the world; syrups for your coffee.

Three:

- Visit those places from your childhood that still linger in your head. The coffee shop with the huge painting that completely hypnotised you as a kid. Do you recognise it now? Do you know who the artist is? Do you know the era it is from? How does it make you feel? Or that school with lingering memories attached to it. Are they good or bad memories? Sit in those places and write about them. Relive them and see how much you've grown.

Four:

- Change little details in your everyday life. Do you always put honey in your milk? Try flavoured ones: clover honey, lavender honey, eucalyptus honey. New and bold makeup looks. Go for the more scenic and beautiful routes instead of the convenient ones. Make every moment that much more special.

Five:

- Avoid using the big light as much as possible: use candles, sun light, LED lights, wall lamps and notice how much more romantic your house looks and feels.

Six:

- Invest in long baths: bath salts, incense, candles, herbs, oils, and treat them like an integral part of your week or month, not like a special occasion. Baths are so relaxing and can really help you take a break from all the noise in the world.

Seven:

- Indulge in your favourite daydream scenarios: magical gardens with fairies and unicorns, gothic castles that smell like dust and decay, underwater kingdoms with mermaids, dystopic sci-fi planets. What is the soundtrack? The food? The clothes? Play pretend, whenever you like!

Eight:

- Ditch the ugliness from your life. No more plastic tupperwares, dumb cups, old sheets and pyjamas, wall frames with cliché quotes. Instead go for detailed, intricate substitutes in glass, metal, clay, stone… (do it ethically however, donate or sell whatever you're going to discard and buy the replacements second hand.)

Nine:

- Figure out in your birth chart which element you're lacking. Connect more with the one that lacks and seek the one you have abundance of; that's your refuge. For example, I'm almost 70% fire and have almost no earth. I find that when I gaze at a candle flame or smell something burning I feel comforted and at peace. And when I walk in forests and touch trees I feel more fulfilled and apt.

Ten:

- Go through those movies in your watchlist that you're dying to watch and feel a pull towards but then end up just watching your comfort ones…yeah I see you. But I believe that if you feel a pull towards something, it is for you; in one way or another. I finally managed to watch ‘Valerie and her week of wonders’ (1970) and was absolutely enthralled by the visuals, it really spoke to me and I find myself thinking about it a lot ever since. That brings me to my next and last idea.

Eleven:

- Give in to your (non-destructive) impulses. You're craving a mojito by the beach? Do it. Feel like watching your comfort movie instead of a new one (aha)? Do it. A car ride across the entire shore? Do it. Your body feels tense and is craving some stretches? Do it. That really expensive guitar that won't leave your mind? Do it. Be mindful and intentional of course, don't starve for a whole month just to get that guitar but if you can, do whatever your heart desires, do it shamelessly!!

Above all have fun and take care of yourself, life is already hard as it is.
