A Girls Guide: The Wild Siren Seance

by Lily Williamson

It’s officially Halloween season and as we enter October the thought on all of our minds is, how can we celebrate the spooky holiday. If clubbing isn’t for you and you want to plan something a little closer to home, then this is for you. Here’s how to plan your ultimate spooky soiree, wild siren style, whether it’s just an intimate dinner and drinks with close friends or a larger gathering, these ideas can be used to elevate both kinds of occasion. So, keep reading … if you dare.

  1. Atmosphere

When planning for an occasion like Halloween, the atmosphere is one of the most important features to kick start your evening. This can be achieved using appropriate decoration. Pinterest is full of inspiration and ideas (including our own). It’s important however to choose some kind of basic theme so your decorations are cohesive. In terms of our aesthetic here at wild siren, we’re all about rock n’ roll with an understated elegance and a hint of rock and roll. To pin point this theme is very important. Deep blood reds, vacant charcoal hues and pure whites just waiting to be stained are just a few options. To bring in that rustic element, how about candle sticks, but instead of spending money on holders keep old wine or alcohol bottles that hold a memory or have a cool design that you like and switch it up by getting textured or coloured candle sticks.

2. Laying the table

When it comes to laying the table every dinner party needs flowers, but for this séance buy some roses a few weeks in advance and allow for them to wilt and decay, this will give your dinner table that little bit of edge. Don’t be afraid of clutter as long as it’s organised and with purpose. Vinyl record place mats are an easy and affordable accessory as you can always find old vinyl in charity or vintage shops. To bring that necessary elegance pearls and feathers make great centrepiece decoration as you can adapt them depending on where you place your dishes. Finally, garlands are a very easy way to enhance your space. You can easily make or buy them to place in a doorway or above your drinks station. These could be made with old playing cards or tissue paper. Decorations is your opportunity to get creative and have fun while also creating an experience that you are your guests will enjoy … or else.

3. Entertainment

Moving on to entertainment, it would be an option to put on a playlist with some funky lighting and leave it at that, but it takes very minimal effort to enhance the experience that little bit further. A record player is a wild siren séance staple. Have a place for one at your gathering as not only does it look cool, but it can be a way for your friends to have input over the music. Leave out a selection of records and every so often someone can change it up to something they want to listen to. Playing Guitar or various instruments with musical friends can be another way to create an inviting vibe to the event. Candlelight, harmonies and red wine sounds like the perfect night to me.It’s understandable that not all hosts feel the need to have this level of entertainment, but for those who do this would make your soiree a night to remember. On the other hand if you want to bring more horror and fear to the evening you could watch a horror film or go one step further and buy a Ouija board. Whether it’s just for a haunting effect or the desire to contact the dead, it will bring the creepy factor and give your friends something to scream about.

4. Photos

Photo opportunities are also important, thrift an old mirror and leave out some lipstick, people can kiss or write on the mirror. It’s a unique way of creating memories by getting some cool pictures of you and your friends and customising a mirror. If however, you wanted to take that next step when it comes to party planning, great entertainment for this kind of evening would be a murder mystery. You can buy packs online or make your own if you’re feeling adventurous. This could be the main event for the evening and could be paired with wanted poster photo booths and a mugshot wall of all those accused. You could make it as big or as simple as you want too.

5. Food & Drink

Now on to the most important part of any foul function, food and beverages. The important thing with Halloween is to take your regular favourite party snacks and make them just a little bit spooky. If you want cakes splatter them with some fake blood or make a charcuterie board but have some horror themed accessories amid the meat and cheese. It’s all about adapting the food to fit your own aesthetic. You can have tiered serving platters of jelly injections or wine in blood bags. Or better yet, you could have a cigarette tower in the centre of the table and make food an afterthought. That’s the true beauty of hosting, you can decide what will work for you and your occasion. You can also make beverages into a game of risk, pick your poison or trick or treat, and have good or bad options. Who doesn’t love a game of chance?

So, there we have it, a range of ideas from us at TheWild Siren for planning your own spooky séance on any scale. This is your opportunity to host whatever sort of soiree you want. Be extra, have fun with it and make it a night no one will ever forget.
